Fire dept monitoring three flooded schools in Kanowit

SIBU: The Fire and Rescue Department is monitoring three flooded schools in the Kanowit district near here, with flood waters reaching between 0.8 and 0.9 metres in height earlier tonight following a heavy downpour which lasted about four hours.

Kanowit Fire and Rescue Station chief Arrahman Chik said the affected schools are Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Balingiau, SK Sungai Tuah and SK Ulu Bawan, with a total population of 288 pupils, 46 teachers and 25 other staff members.

The school session earlier today went on as usual but following the rising flood waters, all pupils were allowed to return to their respective homes as a safety measure, he told Bernama, explaining that all three schools provided hostel facilities for the pupils.

Arrahman added that at 9 pm, the flood waters had begun to recede.
