Sarawak moves to tackle connectivity gaps in Limbang, Lawas
LAWAS, Aug 28 — Sarawak’s telecommunications modernisation agenda is prioritising efforts to address connectivity disruptions in northern Sarawak, particularly in Limbang and Lawas.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the collaboration between the Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunications, Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SEDC) and Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) would help improve digital connectivity and government services.
“We welcome the collaboration between SEB and SEDC to improve digital connectivity, particularly in northern Sarawak involving Limbang and Lawas.
“This is a necessity, especially as Sarawak is focusing on the digital economy. I hope that through the collaboration between SEDC and SEB, internet connectivity can be improved. This is important for us, including in further enhancing government services,” he said.
Awang Tengah, who is Bukit Sari assemblyman, said this after witnessing the exchange of Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) for the Digitisation of Connectivity in Limbang and Lawas, here yesterday.
He said the issue needed to be addressed immediately to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural areas.
“Besides that, telecommunications services also need to be improved at enforcement, security and rescue agencies,” he said.
He said better connectivity would enable these agencies to respond more swiftly to problems reported by the public.
“Education, healthcare, business and security now require fast connectivity,” he added.
Awang Tengah said businesses in Lawas were facing problems with e-payment services, while the Lawas district police headquarters was also experiencing internet connectivity issues despite its important role in disaster management and other matters.
“If we can improve this and make communication easier, action can be taken more quickly,” he said.
Also present were State Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah, and SEDC chairman and SEB board member Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani.
