Anwar orders National Security Council, Nadma and Foreign Ministry to step up aid for Malaysians in India, Nepal
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has directed the National Security Council (MKN), National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) and Foreign Ministry to immediately coordinate efforts to assist Malaysians affected by the situation in India and Nepal.
Anwar said he had instructed the relevant agencies to identify and contact Malaysian diplomatic missions in both countries to expedite assistance.
“I have instructed all relevant departments, including the National Security Council (MKN) and the Foreign Ministry, to immediately identify and contact our ministries and embassies in both India and Nepal to expedite efforts to assist them,” he told reporters after launching the National Innovation and Commercialisation Expo (Nice 2026) at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here.
His remarks came as authorities in Nepal continued search and rescue operations following an earthquake triggered severe flash floods in a border area between Nepal and Tibet on Wednesday, killing nearly 157 people in the Himalayan nation.
More than 50 Malaysian travellers in Nepal are still unreachable after the incident, Malaysian Embassy in Kathmandu’s charge d’affaires Mohd Firdaus Azman told Bernama last night.
The floods swept through the Rasuwagadhi-Timure area, destroying roads, buildings and infrastructure and cutting off access to parts of the affected region.
Anwar, in a Facebook post following the incident, said the government was taking immediate steps to ensure the welfare and safety of Malaysians affected by the situation.
He also said the Malaysian diplomatic missions in the affected countries would be contacted to facilitate efforts to locate and assist Malaysians there.
