Sarawak air quality improves as Serian and Samarahan drop from unhealthy to moderate

KUCHING, Aug 17 — Sarawak recorded moderate air quality at all monitoring stations except Bario, where the Air Pollutant Index (API) reading remained at good level as of 8am on Monday, according to the Natural Resources and Environment Board’s Daily Haze Watch.

Air quality in Serian and Samarahan improved from unhealthy levels — with API readings of 157 and 151 respectively at 4pm on Sunday — to moderate levels of 98 and 92 by 8am.

Lundu and Tebedu also improved, dropping from unhealthy readings of 111 and 109 at 4pm on Sunday to 93 and 73 respectively by 8am.

However, three areas recorded slight increases in API readings. They were Sibu, rising from 66 at 4pm on Sunday to 70 by 8am; Kapit (from 52 to 54); and Lubok Antu (from 68 to 70).

Samalaju registered the biggest drop, from 79 at 4pm on Sunday to 62 by 8am, followed by Miri (from 79 to 65), Industrial Training Institute Miri (from 75 to 62), Limbang (from 68 to 52).

Kuching’s API reading also fell further to 87 by 8am, seven points lower than 4pm on Sunday.

Other locations with decreasing readings were Sri Aman, from 84 at 4pm on Sunday to 80 by 8am; Sarikei (from 76 to 75); Bintulu (from 70 to 67); Mukah (from 59 to 57).

Lawas remained unchanged at 67, while Bario’s recorded 50.

An API reading ranging from 51 to 100 is classified as moderate, while API readings between 0 and 50 are categorised as good.
