On final day as MACC chief, Azam Baki rules out politics and business in next chapter

PUTRAJAYA, May 12 — Outgoing Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki has officially ruled out a career in politics or the private sector, vowing instead to dedicate his retirement to lifelong public service.

Speaking to reporters after his retirement ceremony today, Azam addressed long-standing speculation regarding his post-retirement plans, insisting he has no intention of transitioning into a businessman or a politician, despite being frequently asked about such prospects.

“I did not receive any offers from outside. It is far from my intention to become a politician or a businessman, as some have asked me before,” he clarified.

Instead, the veteran graft-buster expressed a desire to continue contributing to the nation’s governance and integrity framework.

Azam also said that his commitment to the people remains absolute and does not end with his official tenure.

“I am a man who will continue working until the mosque calls me to be laid to rest,” Azam said, using a culturally resonant phrase to signal his lifelong dedication.

“I will continue to work and serve the people for as long as my energy is needed. I will also try to assist wherever I can, based on my experience, in upholding good governance and integrity.”

Azam added that while he remains open to opportunities in the public sphere, he is equally prepared to pursue independent work that benefits his family and society if no formal roles arise.

Azam officially ended his duties today, marking the conclusion of a high-profile chapter in Malaysian law enforcement.

He will be succeeded by Datuk Seri Abdul Halim Aman, who is expected to officially clock in and assume leadership of the commission tomorrow morning.
