Sin Chew fined RM100,000 for flag error, Sinar for wrong info on IGP

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 19 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has imposed RM100,000 fines each on Sin Chew Media Corporation Berhad and Sinar Karangkraf Sdn Bhd following authorisation from the Attorney General’s Chambers.

MCMC said Sin Chew Media was penalised for publishing an incomplete illustration of the Malaysian flag on its digital newspaper platform.

Sinar Karangkraf faced action for posting false information about the inspector-general of police on its official Instagram account, involving claims about leadership positions in a local political party.

Both investigations were conducted under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, with penalties under Section 233(2).

The compound action was taken according to Section 243 of the same law.

MCMC said that the Malaysian flag represents national sovereignty, unity, and dignity, requiring accurate and respectful display at all times.

The commission also warned that spreading false content involving national security institutions could disrupt public peace and undermine public confidence in authorities.

It further reminded media organisations and social media users to ensure accuracy and authenticity in their published content, especially regarding official national symbols.
