Anwar to meet US ambassador Edgard Kagan today to discuss bilateral ties, Asean chairmanship
KUALA LUMPUR, March 11 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to meet the United States Ambassador to Malaysia, Edgard D. Kagan, later today.
Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, the prime minister’s senior press secretary, said Anwar and Kagan are expected to discuss bilateral relations.
“The meeting will also touch on Malaysia’s role in the Asean chairmanship next year and the upcoming special Asean-US summit,” he said during the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) daily briefing, which was broadcast live today.
Tunku Nashrul said the Prime Minister’s Office will share full details of the meeting between Anwar and Kagan later.
Last month, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said Malaysia is making efforts to hold a special Asean-US summit.
He said Asean will continue to be integrated and also remain neutral.
The previous Asean-US summit was held in Vientiane, Laos in October last year. The summit was attended by then-US secretary of state Antony Blinken.
Anwar’s meeting with Kagan, a seasoned diplomat and senior State Department officer, could also touch on the US’ reciprocal tariffs that could impact Malaysia’s trade-dependent economy.
The US remains Malaysia’s third largest export country at RM17.25 billion worth of total exports as of January this year.
