University steps up efforts to tackle stray dogs after cat deaths, says Brickfields police chief
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 10 — A public university in the capital, involved in a recent spate of cat deaths due to suspected attacks by stray dogs, has launched an internal operation to tackle the growing presence of strays on its campus.
Brickfields District Police Chief ACP Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood confirmed that the university has been actively informing the police about its efforts to address the issue, following the discovery of a large number of stray dogs on the premises.
“This is an internal action by the university management, as they also have their own security and veterinary departments. As is known, the capture of stray dogs is done with the help of animal rights activists,” he said during a Property Disposal Ceremony at the Brickfields District Police Headquarters today.
Ku Mashariman also noted that the post-mortem of a cat carcass, as per the police report received on January 2, revealed that the cause of death was a bite from a stray animal. This brings the total of five cats confirmed dead from similar attacks on the university campus.
To date, police have recorded statements from 11 individuals, including lecturers, students, auxiliary police, animal rights activists, and veterinarians.
On January 5, another cat was found dead on campus, but no investigation was initiated as the cause was attributed to a stray dog.
In addition, Ku Mashariman highlighted that today’s disposal involved 1,874 items from 101 investigation files spanning 2019 to 2024, with a total value of RM387,227.
“All the items disposed of today involved two departments: the Criminal Investigation Department and the Commercial Crime Investigation Department,” he added.
Among the items disposed of were air pistols with steel balls, mobile phones, computers, cigarettes, and alcoholic beverages.
Also present at the event were Sessions Court Judge Rosli Ahmad and Deputy Public Prosecutor Sabri Othman.
