‘Men seduced to rape’: PKR senator apologises, retracts proposal
PUCHONG: PKR senator Mohd Imran Abd Hamid apologised to Malaysians over his controversial remark calling for laws to protect men from being seduced by women into committing sexual crimes.
In a statement today, Imran also said he had retracted the proposal which he forwarded in the Dewan Negara yesterday.
“Although my intentions were sincere, I did not expect it to be seen as a huge mistake which offended many women, as well as men who considered it an insult.
“As such, I offer my apologies and retract my proposal,” he said.
Yesterday, Imran caused an uproar in the Dewan Negara while debating the Syarie Legal Profession (Federal Territories) Bill 2019, which was passed in the Dewan Rakyat on July 15.
The retired Navy admiral proposed for a law to protect men from the actions, words and attire of women, claiming it can be used to seduce men into committing sex crimes such as molest, rape and watching pornography.
Imran’s call was even was backed by Dewan Negara deputy president Datuk Seri Abdul Halim Abdul Samad, who said it was a ‘good viewpoint’.
However, the PKR senator was roundly criticised by non-governmental organisations and politicians from both sides of the divide.
Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Hannah Yeoh reminded Imran that even children and babies have become victims of sexual crimes, which obviously did not involve any seduction from the part of the victims.
Earlier today, PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had dismissed Imran’s proposal, calling it an insult to women, as well as portraying men as immoral and easily seduced to commit sexual crimes.
