Youth groups display patriotism in different ways

KUALA LUMPUR: Today’s young generation still has a high spirit of patriotism towards the country but it is displayed through different approaches and platforms.

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) School of Social Sciences lecturer Prof Dr Sivamurugan Pandian said this group is more comfortable expressing the spirit of patriotism through cyberspace in line with current developments.

“We cannot make general assumptions that today’s youth does not have a sense of love for the country.

“Some have uploaded videos about independence on Instagram, Facebook, while others have changed emojis for flags, countries, leading figures, or heroes which directly showcased their involvement,” he said on the Rukun Negara Hour programme on the topic ‘Patriotic Spirit Among Malaysians’ produced by Bernama Radio, here, today.

According to him, even if it is not physically demonstrated, it does not mean that today’s youth is not accustomed with the values of independence.

Sivamurugan said although the younger generation had different approaches, methods and instruments in highlighting their love and affection for the country he believed it did not deviate from the concept of patriotism.

“For me, the value of patriotism or independence is national in nature, only the thinking is modified in line with the current times,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sivamurugan said the five principles of the Rukun Negara – Belief in God; Loyalty to King and Country; Upholding the Constitution; Rule of Law; and Good Behaviour and Morality are not just to be memorised but need to be demonstrated as a form of practice in life.

“It should be our flesh and blood and if it is just memorisation, it will not be something meaningful in life because we are the ones who give meaning and significance behind the five principles of the Rukun Negara,” he said.
