KUALA LUMPUR: The government aims to shut down all illegal factories in Pasir Gudang, Johor in a joint operation this month.

Energy, Science, Technology, Environment, And Climate Change Minister Yeo Bee Yin said this at the Parliament today, adding that she will work with the Johor state government on the matter.

“My ministry will continue to do its best for Pasir Gudang. I go there once a week to ensure whatever that can be done is done.

“Today, I will meet Johor menteri besar to target the illegal factories. We will conduct a joint operation this month to close down all illegal factories in Pasir Gudang.

“Therefore, I urge the public to lodge reports with the Department of Environment (DOE) if they have any information on these illegal factories,” she said in her reply to Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim.

Earlier, Hassan alluded that the second round of air pollution in his constituency was due to weak enforcement by the current and previous administrations.

However, Yeo said that enforcement at the constituency had risen sharply since the first air pollution was detected in March, at Sungai Kim Kim.

“Since the Sungai Kim Kim incident, enforcement operations have increased by 300%, including inspections and enforcement operations by the DOE.

“If you compare between the period of January to June and the same period last year, there has been a 40% increase in enforcement and inspection operations,” she said.
