PUCHONG: Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahdi Hamidi and PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang will sign a cooperation charter or ‘piagam mufakat’ on Sept 14.

According to Umno Online, a joint statement by Umno and PAS secretary generals said both parties have finalised the charter and memorandum of understanding, which was drafted by a joint committee.

The signing ceremony will take place at the Umno headquarters in the Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur.

Following the shock election defeat last year, Umno has warmed up its ties with PAS. However, the Islamist party did not join the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition.

At present, BN control the states of Pahang and Perlis, whereas PAS control Terengganu and Kelantan.

BN has 40 MPs while PAS has 18 at the Dewan Rakyat.

Yesterday, the Umno Supreme Council unanimously agreed to cooperate with PAS based on the principle of ‘taawun siyasi’ (political cooperation).

The council also granted powers to Zahid to negotiate with any parties interested to work with the Umno-PAS alliance.

With that, Zahid announced that Umno is willing to talk to any political entities, as long as they are not aligned to DAP[1].
