Tanjung Piai by-election: Tough contenders

PETALING JAYA: Today is nomination day for the Tanjung Piai by-election, and as of 9.40 am five contenders are expected to contest for the seat.

The Tanjung Piai by-election is being held following the death of its incumbent, Dr Mohd Farid Mohd Farik, 42, of heart complications on Sept 21.

In the general election 2018, Mohd Farid won the seat after polling 21,255 votes to defeat Wee (20,731 votes) and PAS candidate Nordin Othman (2,962 votes).

The election will see multi-cornered fight among three candidates from major political parties, namely Karmaine Sardini of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) representing Pakatan Harapan, Datuk Seri Wee Jeck Seng of MCA representing Barisan Nasional, and Wendy Subramaniam of Gerakan. Meanwhile, two others come from a splinter party Berjasa and Gabungan Teksi SeMalaysia.

It is not known if more will join to contest. The Tanjung Piai constituency consists of 57% Malay, 42% Chinese, and 1% Indian. Early voting will begin at Nov 12 and polling day will be at Nov 16.
