Same-sex couples tie the knot in Taiwan as it becomes the first Asian country to legalise gay marriages. Anew page in history is turned.
One week ago, Taiwan became the first Asian country to legalise same-sex weddings. Since then, they have also had various gay weddings in the country.
Last week in the Taipei region of Taiwan a lot of people got together in the Xinyi District Household Registration office to see history being written as one after the other same-sex couples arrived to officially register their unions.
The LGBT citizens in Taiwan struggled for two and a half years to legalise same-sex marriage. The excitement peaked to such a level that marriage registration applications started pouring in exactly a week after Taiwan’s Legislation made headlines by voting to recognise same-sex marriages.
Ms Lu, the chief coordinator of the Marriage Equality Coalition Taiwan, in an interview to a daily news website, said “I’m so moved by the love stories that people have been sharing on the internet.”
“Many LGBT people in Taiwan have said that even though they don’t have plans to marry, they now feel accepted by their country”, she added.
The first same-sex couple to get married in Taiwan and make history were Tseng Hui-yu and Wei Li-na. The couple has been together for over a decade and they finally legalised their union. They posed for photos with new identification cards that showed their changed marital status.
In the same interview, Ms Wei said, “We’re pretty excited,” and Ms Teng said, “We’re very happy.”
