PUCHONG: Parti Peribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman alleged that former political secretary to Tun Mahathir Mohamad, Muhammad Zahid Md Arip was the mastermind of the infamous ‘Sheraton Move’.

In a report by Malay daily Berita Harian, Syed Saddiq said he was also asked to attend that meeting, allegedly at the behest of Mahathir.

“Mahathir’s name was used to compel Bersatu leaders to attend the meeting at Sheraton but Mahathir himself said that he was unaware of the meeting.

“The real traitor is Zahid because he used Mahathir’s name a few times so that all Bersatu MPs would attend the meeting that night,” he said.

The former Youth and Sports Minister said Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi himself had met with Mahathir a few times to invite the latter to form a pact.

“However, Mahathir disagreed to co-opt Umno as a whole. He was only acceptable to Umno members joining Pakatan on an individual basis,” he said.

The Muar MP said that these Umno leaders had planned to undermine Bersatu if they agreed to join Perikatan Nasional, as the latter pact had 42 seats in Dewan Rakyat.

“Look at the situation now, Perak and Johor are now under Umno. This is why we should cooperate with them.

“We have our own pride. I hope all of us will stay loyal to Mahathir because he is the one who formed this party,” said Syed Saddiq.
