SINGAPORE, July 17 — Singapore has cancelled the work permits of two Bangladeshi workers and repatriated them after investigations by the Internal Security Department (ISD) found they had made extremist postings on social media.
The Straits Times reported that Tayani Md Risad, 25, and Islam Sahedul, 37, were separately investigated in July over their online activities before being sent back to Bangladesh.
An ISD spokeswoman said Risad had expressed support for Bangladeshi radical Islamist writer Shafiur Rahman Farabi, who has incited violence against secular and atheist bloggers.
Farabi is also allegedly linked to Hizb ut-Tahrir, a fundamentalist Islamist group banned in Bangladesh.
According to the report, Sahedul, meanwhile, had made inflammatory posts about the Israel-Iran conflict and shared divisive religious views, including referring to Muslims who do not support governance under Islamic law as infidels.
“While investigations did not find any indication that the two men intended to conduct terrorist attacks or were involved in terrorism activities in Singapore, their extremist and divisive views are inimical to Singapore’s multiracial and multi-religious society,” ISD spokeswoman was quoted as saying.
The pair were not linked to previous cases involving self-radicalised individuals dealt with under Singapore’s Internal Security Act.
Bangladesh media reported that the two men were detained upon arrival at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on July 8, with authorities seizing three mobile phones and three passports.
Bangladesh police later sought more time to investigate their alleged links with militant groups, including possible networks and funding sources.
