Sabri: Zahid called for a sudden meeting, no idea on details!

PUCHONG: We were called for a sudden meeting by Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, said several party leaders today.

Speaking to reporters after arriving at Umno headquarters at Menara Dato Onn, the Umno leaders claimed no details were provided by Zahid on the matter.

“I don’t know why we were summoned. No agenda was given. All I know is that Zahid had called us for the meeting,” said the Bera MP.

Also seen arriving were Umno secretary general Tan Sri Annuar Musa, supreme council member Tan Sri Noh Omar and youth chief Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

The meeting started at 4pm and is still ongoing as of press time.

Earlier today, Bersatu leaders, including chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, held a private meeting at its headquarters at Yayasan Selangor.

The meeting ended earlier just now but Mahathir did not divulge any details to the press. He was said to be heading to meet PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, who is also holding a secret meeting with those aligned to him at the Sheraton Hotel Petaling Jaya.

The meetings today fuelled rumours that Bersatu, together with those aligned to Mahathir within Pakatan, may leave the ruling coalition to form a new pact with Umno and PAS.

Last Friday, the Pakatan leadership had decided to allow Mahathir to announce his own retirement date, as opposed to quitting in May.

It was said that the ruling coalition decided against pressuring Mahathir after the latter said that he had Statutory Declarations from 138 MPs to support his leadership, adding that he would not hesitate to form a new pact with the opposition to continue running the country.

Meanwhile, Annuar said the he would only organise a press conference on today’s meeting if Zahid gives his nod.  

“If the president gives the green light, I will do a press conference after the meeting,” he said.
