SANDAKAN: The Sabah National Security Council (NSC) is targeting to deport more than 13,000 undocumented immigrants this year.

Its director Sharifah Sitti Saleha Habib Yussof said measures to achieve this target would be implemented with relevant government departments and agencies such as the Immigration Department, Royal Malaysian Police, Maritime Enforcement Agency of Malaysia, Ministry of Health and Sabah’s East Coast Special Security Area (ESSCom).

“Last year, about 13,000 immigrants were deported,” she told reporters during the deportation of 779  immigrants at the Sandakan Port near here last night.

Sharifah Sitti Saleha said the deportation process was conducted on a weekly basis to reduce capacity at temporary detention centers and to facilitate the search and arrest of immigrants in the state.

She said so far this year, 1,994 immigrants had been deported in the state.

Meanwhile, Sabah Immigration director Datuk Dr Mohamad Sade Mohamad Amin said that the Immigration Department targeted to deport 77,000 immigrants nationwide this year with 7,000 of the total, from Sabah.
