SHAH ALAM: A group of 30 ex-Bukit Beruntung estate workers staged a protest in front of the Selangor state secretariat building in their attempts to resolve their housing woes.

Accompanied by PSM secretary general A Sivarajan they submitted a memorandum to the office of Selangor Menteri Besar Amiruddin Shari.

“We want the state government to place a caveat registrar on the land lot no. 2099.  We want the state government to acquire adequate land for the construction of 54 single storey houses with infrastructure,” the memorandum stated.

Relating the case to the media, PSM secretary general A Sivarajan said the workers had to make way from the estate for the Bukit Beruntung township.

They were relocated with the promise of getting a single storey home by Prospell Enterprise in 1991.  Sale and purchase agreement were signed with the company’s subsidiary Prospell Development in 1999.

The developer company took a 10% deposit for the low-cost houses which was priced at RM25,000 then.

“The developer company have since claimed that they can’t build the houses and will return the deposit that they collected from the ex-worker,” said Sivarajan as the ex-workers staged the protest.

“They were expecting an airport to be built but that did not materialise,” he added.

“In addition to that the subsidiary company have already winded up but its parent company is reaping profits from sales of palm oil,” he also said.

He added that the ex-workers were cheated for a second time when the initial land allocated for the construction of the houses were changed from a location close to the road to a land lot in the interior.

“Clearly the company management doesn’t want to resolve the issue. That is why we want the state to intervene.  The Menteri Besar, Amiruddin Shari must decide since he is in charge of land affairs.

“The state can use the land acquisition policy – a policy in practice since 1991. Even the Human Resources Minister said aid will be given once the land is acquired,” he said based on a meeting that the group had with the minister, M Kulasegaran.

The Leaders Online spoke to several former estate workers who staged the protest.

“The country has gained its independence 62 years ago, but we have yet gain ours. For the past 20 years we have lived in a rented house for a price of RM450 monthly,” said 55-year-old G Tamilselvan.

“We lived there for three generations and yet they cheated us. What is the new government going to do about this?” he added.

Another former estate worker M Manikavasagam, 55, had this to say:

“About 10 to 15 of us have passed away without seeing the promised homes.  We are struggling for a home to death.”

Sivarajan meanwhile handed a copy of the memorandum to a representative of Selangor state exco for socioeconomic empowerment, development and caring government, V Ganabatirao.

“They told us that they would arrange for a meeting with us next week,” said Sivarajan.
