PUCHONG: The appointment of transwoman, Rania Zara Medina as Country Coordinating Mechanism committee member by Deputy Health Minister Dr Lee Boon Chye for year 2019 to 2021 courted controversy from certain quarters.
Rania, an activist with Justice for Sisters, was born in Perak and won the Malaysia TW Icon title for year 2017 to 2018.
According to the Global Fund, Country Coordinating Mechanisms are national committees from each country that submit funding applications to Global Fund on behalf of the entire country.
They include representatives from the government, private sector, technical partners, civil society and communities living with diseases.
“I would like to thank the whole (transgender) community and my supporters who has been supporting me since the beginning of the nomination to today’s appointment.
“Without your trust, I wouldn’t be able to take on this responsibility. I will do my best for all of US,” she said on her Facebook page.

The appointment, however, did not go down well with the certain quarters who questioned the government’s rationale in appointing a transwoman to represent the government.
Many blamed the Pakatan Harapan government for the appointment. Some even said that the appointment was not surprising in light of the gay sex video allegedly implicating the Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.
They used Islam as a basis to criticise Rania’s appointment.
