PUCHONG: The faction aligned to PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim approached Selangor Umno state lawmakers in a bid to oust Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari who is aligned to party deputy president, Datuk Seri Azmin Ali.

The Malaysian Insight reported an unnamed Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblyman as claiming Anwar’s supporters sought out Selangor Opposition Leader Rizam Ismail to back a no-confidence vote against Amirudin, but was turned down as the ouster would not change Umno’s position in the 56-seat state legislative assembly.

“As Umno only has five seats now, we will still be the Opposition regardless of whether the menteri besar changes,” the source was quoted as saying.

Rizam’s support was sought as he had been critical of the PKR-led Selangor government’s alleged failure to table amendments to the state Islamic laws during the latest assembly sitting.

“Is there a split in Selangor PH? They have 50 seats but can’t even table this important amendment,” Rizam reportedly said.

The ouster bid comes in the wake of Amirudin claiming that he knew the identity of those responsible for the sex videos that implicated Azmin.

The scandal revealed the depth of factionalism within PKR as one group backed Anwar and the other, Azmin.

The BN source also claimed that Rizam was also approached by Amirudin’s supporters but both the groups were disappointed as Rizam who is also Sungai Air Tawar assemblyman said that Umno would stay out of this matter since it was not beneficial.

Umno has five seats in the Selangor legislative assembly.

Rumours for a no – confidence vote grew stronger when the state legislative assembly sitting ended within two days instead of, the original, nine.

State assembly speaker Ng Suee Lim dismissed the no-confidence vote as no such motion was filed.

He also explained the shortened sitting was due to low attendance in the assembly.
