KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 — Police are reviewing dashcam and closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage to reconstruct a fatal accident involving an Immigration Department lorry that killed a father and his two daughters in Jalan Sultan Ismail early yesterday.
The investigation is focusing on footage from the vicinity of the Maju Junction intersection and the dashcam installed in the department’s vehicle, NST reported.
Immigration Director-General Datuk Zakaria Shaaban confirmed that the lorry was relatively new and that the dashcam equipment had been handed over to the police to assist in their inquiries.
Zakaria added that the department maintains strict guidelines on vehicle usage, stating, “The internal investigation will reveal if the driver followed the guidelines.”
According to Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa, preliminary findings indicate that the 43-year-old driver was the sole occupant of the lorry at the time of the crash.
The vehicle was travelling from the Kuala Lumpur Immigration office to Chow Kit to collect detainees following an operation against undocumented migrants.
Police believe the lorry entered the intersection on a red light, despite having its siren and beacon lights activated. Simultaneously, a Proton Saga driven by a 50-year-old man was traversing the intersection on a green light, heading from Chow Kit towards Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman.
The resulting collision caused the Immigration lorry to veer toward a pedestrian area, where it rammed into four family members waiting to cross the road before striking an Inokom Matrix.
The impact killed Shaik Mohd Firdaus Shaikh Yahya, 53, and his two daughters, Siti Nor Sazlin, 25, and Siti Darwisyah Auni, 12, at the scene. Shaik Mohd Firdaus’ wife, Norhayati Razali, 55, sustained serious injuries and remains in the intensive care unit at Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
Zamzuri noted that police have yet to record Norhayati’s statement to allow her time to recover.
“We want to give her some time and allow the situation to settle before taking her statement,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. Both the driver of the Immigration lorry and the driver of the Proton Saga have been remanded for one day to assist with the investigation.
