PM: Microsoft to establish its first datacenter region as part of “Bersama Malaysia” initiative

PUCHONG: The Malaysian government has announced its partnership with Microsoft under the Bersama Malaysia initiative, which will see the establishment of its first data centre region in Malaysia.

In a statement, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the initiative will see investments amounting to US$1 billion (RM4 billion) over the next five years.

“According to International Data Corporation, the ripple effects of the data centre region investment today could translate to US$6.90 of revenue generated in the local cloud ecosystem for every US$1 of Microsoft Malaysia’s cloud revenue by 2024.

“It is expected to help create 19,000 jobs including 4,000 IT-related jobs amongst its cloud users,” said the prime minister.

For a start, the partners include the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU), Human Resources Development Fund (HRDF), Petronas, Celcom and Grab.

He said to realize a regional data center, the country needed human capital skilled in data science.

“In this regard, I welcome the public-private partnership formed by Microsoft and the strategic partners signed today,” he said.

Muhyiddin said, as part of the Joint Malaysia Initiative, Microsoft pledged to improve the skills of one million Malaysians by the end of 2023.

“I hope this partnership can be strengthened and bridge the digital divide and empower the people through technology in line with the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMKE-12) and the Vision for Shared Prosperity (WKB2030),” he said.

Also present at the event were Microsoft Malaysia Managing Director, K Raman, Minister of International Trade and Industry (MITI) Datuk Seri Mohame Azmin Ali; Minister of Human Resources, Datuk Seri M Saravanan; Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy), Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed and several others.

At the event, Muhyiddin also witnessed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Microsoft and MAMPU, HRDF, Petronas, Celcom and Grab.

Earlier, Raman said the announcement of the initiative was a great success for the company during its 28 years of operation in the country. According to an International Data Corporation (IDC) study, Microsoft’s investment will help generate up to US $ 4.6 billion in new revenue over the next four years in the ecosystem of partners and customers using public services in Malaysia.

The regional data center is expected to provide trusted public services with world -class levels of data security and privacy as well as the ability to store data locally.

It provides full access to Microsoft Cloud facilities including Microsoft Azure that allows anyone to create for a specific purpose using public services and capabilities including computing, networking, databases, analytics, AI and the Internet of Things (Internet of Things -IoT).

Also available, Microsoft 365 to connect, collaborate, work and learn remotely online. In addition, Dynamics 365 and Power Platform build and manage scalable enterprise critical solutions with smart business applications.

Asked about the location of the data complex, Raman declined to comment further. “It is in the center of Kuala Lumpur where the location cannot be disclosed to the public due to security reasons,” he said.
