PUCHONG: PAS wants the government to impose heavier sentence against drunk drivers, especially those who cause death.
Its vice president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the Pakatan Harapan government should amend Act 333 of the Road Transport Act 1987 to increase punishment against the drunk drivers.[1]
“Based on Section 41 and 44 of the Act, the current maximum punishment is imprisonment of not more than 10 years and a fine of not more than RM20,000.
“But I say, the people want harsher punishment to be imposed on drunk drivers,” he said, in a statement today.
Yesterday, one died and another was badly injured after the motorcycle they were riding on was hit by a drunk driver at Jalan Kebun, Klang.
Tuan Ibrahim urged Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook to amend the law to mete out severe punishment against such traffic offenders.
He also said that PAS will work towards banning the unbridled sale of alcoholic beverages nationwide.
“This issue is a serious matter and we cannot allow drunk drivers to continue causing accidents,” he said.
