KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor DAP chairman Gobind Singh Deo dismissed the possibility of the tabling a bill that permitted unilateral conversion of minors again as suggested by Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari as it was not deliberated at the state Pakatan Harapan meeting that was held yesterday.
“The question of it being re-tabled was never discussed at the Pakatan Harapan meeting yesterday.
“So of course, the question of it being tabled again as it is does not arise,” Gobind who is also Communications and Multimedia Minister told reporters after the memorandum of understanding signing ceremony with Esports Malaysia at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre
He who is also Puchong MP and the party’s national deputy chairman stressed that the DAP is against unilateral conversion of minors, on the basis that it was unconstitutional.
Amirudin stated last night that there was a possibility for the controversial amendment to be tabled again[1].
He also revealed that he had given his mandate to Selangor state legislative assembly speaker Ng Suee Lim to determine whether the bill should be tabled.[2]
The amendment bill that allowed unilateral conversion of minors to Islam was proposed by the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) and is believed to have obtained the aye from the Selangor Ruler, Sultan Sharafudin Shah.
It was however not tabled since Ng shortened the sitting to two days instead of the whole week. He claimed that he was powerless to determine which bill can be tabled.[3]
DAP’s state chapter have declared their full support to Ng over this matter[4].
