PUCHONG: Former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak who is on trial for seven charges involving SRC International revealed the reason for maxing out both of his platinum credit cards in 2014. Both the cards had limits amounting to RM3 million.[1]
In a Facebook posting, he said that the expenses were incurred to purchase gifts for a royalty.
“The expenditure was incurred to purchase gifts for a member of a royal house who has close ties with Malaysia (neither Saudi Arabia nor Abu Dhabi).”
Abu Dhabi is the capital of United Arab Emirates.
Najib did not name the royalty but stated that the royalty and his entourage was with Najib’s family during a visit to Italy in 2014.
He added that it was common for leaders to gift other government leaders.
“Normally the government would foot the cost of the gift (as done by the fourth prime minister who gave a big present to then Zimbabwean President Mugabe at that time).
“This time, I footed the bill with my credit card.”

“The purchase and presentation of the gift on 8 Aug 2014 was acknowledged by the recipient via a letter dated 15 Aug 2014.”
Najib who included the letter in his Facebook posting said that he hid the name of the gift recipient as it was not fair to the latter to be disclosed in the public. The original letter have been included as evidence in the ongoing case.
The letter sighted by The Leaders Online was addressed to Najib’s wife, Rosmah Mansor.
