BANGKOK: A group of Myanmar nationals carrying fake passports were arrested in Southern Thailand after attempting to sneak into Malaysia to work.

Thai Immigration Police arrested the seven men who had travelled from Bangkok to Sungai Kolok, Narathiwat by bus and were headed for Malaysia.

Immigration Bureau Division 6 (Southern provinces) investigation chief, Col Pakayot Thanongsak said based on a tip-off, the seven were arrested at the Kuan Meed Checkpoint, Chana District in Songkhla Province, Southern Thailand at 4.30 am (local time) on Christmas eve.

“They acted suspiciously when the authorities inspected their belongings and passports.

“The biometric identification system detected that the passports they were carrying were fake,” he said at a press conference here yesterday.

Pakayot said investigations revealed the seven Myanmar nationals were assisted by a human trafficking syndicate agent from Dawei, Myanmar.

“We believed they snuck into Thailand via Kanchanaburi Province then travel to Bangkok to obtain ‘new passports’ before travelling to Malaysia.

“The suspects admitted that they were headed to Malaysia to work,” he said.

In another separate case, Pakayot said a group of 14 Myanmar nationals, including five women, were arrested at the Hatyai Bus Terminal in Songkhla Province, also for using fake passports.

He said they were arrested while waiting for their agents to fetch them before sending them to their workplace.

“Initial investigations reveal each of them paid 22,000 baht to obtain the passport to work in Thailand,” he said adding that they would be charged for illegally entering the kingdom and for carrying fake passports.
