ALOR SETAR: The Muda Agricultural Development Authority (MADA) is ready to carry out cloud seeding operations in Kedah following the decline in water levels at several of its dams due to the current hot and dry weather.
Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Tun Dr Mahathir, who is also MADA chairman, said MADA was waiting for the suitable cloud and weather to carry out the operations.
“We are on standby, if we see the right cloud, we will do it right away…we have been ready since November but because the weather was not conducive, it’s not suitable for seeding,” he told a press conference after meeting representatives from the Chinese Non-Governmental Organisations at Wisma Darul Aman yesterday.
He said all the mosques in the state had been asked to perform the Istisqa prayers (to pray for rain) on Friday.
Meanwhile in George Town, Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang (PBAPP) chief executive officer Datuk Jaseni Maidinsa said the water levels in Penang’s two major dams – Air Itam and Teluk Bahang – were – are far below the normal effective capacity, due to the recent hot and dry weather.
As of yesterday, the effective capacity of the two dams was at 62% and 39.5% respectively, the lowest compared to three years ago.
“On Jan 14, 2017, the Air Itam Dam was at an effective capacity of 99.4%, 2018 (97.5%) and 2019 (88.7%) while Teluk Bahang Dam was at an effective capacity of 100% in 2017, 2018 (98.6%) and 2019 (81.4%).
“Less rain over the last four months due to the climate change has been identified as the major factor,” he told a press conference here.
