BATU PAHAT, June 24 (Bernama) — The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) foiled an attempt to smuggle some 45,000 crawfish into the country.
Batu Pahat MMEA maritime zone director Commander Mohamad Othman said the contraband, in 19 polystyrene boxes, were seized at Sungai Muar, near here early yesterday morning.
He said the seizure was made following checks on a boat and two suspects at Sungai Muar at 12.50 am yesterday morning.
In a statement, he said the crawfish packed in 450 transparent packages in the polysterene boxes, were believed to be for the local market.
Mohamad said including the boat used in the smuggling bid, the value of the seizure was RM90,000.
He said the boat and both suspects have been taken to the Batu Pahat Maritim Zone for further investigation. The case is being investigated under Customs Act 1967 and Fisheries Act 1985.
