PUCHONG: It is time for the Pakatan Harapan leadership council to set an official retirement date for Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and announce it to the public.
In a statement today, Minority Media Organization (MiMe) chairman Harnarain Singh Gill said Pakatan leaders should be aggressive enough to force a retirement date on Mahathir, to allow PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to become Malaysia’s 8th prime minister.
“In the ‘Should Malaysia wait till November for the transition?’ forum held yesterday night, MPs, who were the panellists in the forum, highlighted the many pros and cons of the transition in terms of economy, policy making and political interests.
“The Pakatan council is empowered to decide and set a firm transition date and therefore MPs, whom were voted by the people, need to compel their leaders that sit in the presidential council,” he said.
Harnarain added that the panellists yesterday were not able to comment on the power transition plan as they do not sit in the presidential council.
“We are in Malaysia Baru and no longer in Barisan Nasional (BN) era where the prime minister decides on his successors. Therefore, we urge the Pakatan council to immediately make an official announcement regarding this matter.
“A firm date will help the government, the civil service, local and foreign investors and especially the rakyat to strengthen and steer the country in a positive direction,” he said.
This morning, Mahathir told in a press conference at Menara Bank Rakyat that he would relinquish the premiership if the Pakatan Harapan leadership council [1]tells him to do so.
“If the leadership council decides that I must quit, then I will go,” he was reported saying.
