PUCHONG: Malaysian Indian Muslim Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Datuk Jamarul Khan Kadir urged the government to boost the economy by bringing in more foreign workers in certain economic sectors.

“Our business activities have slowed a little especially in sectors that require foreign workers.  In times like these, the non – approval of foreign workers affects the business sectors,” he said in a statement.

“The new government should take steps to assist the business sectors,” he added.

Jamarul said this in his wishes for the upcoming Aidilfitri celebrations.  He wished that  the nation would continue to prosper.

The government have already announced its plans to reinstate the foreign worker replacement system to all sectors effective July 1.

The plan received thumbs up from various stakeholders.

Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF)executive director Datuk Shamsuddin Bardan welcomed it since the replacement of foreign workers need not be done through a new application process.

“Prior to the reinstatement, employers had to apply as if they were new workers, although it’s meant for replacement of a previous worker who had left. It caused a lot of red tape, not to mention the costs,” he said.

With the replacement scheme back in place, the normal process is dispensed with as long as the employer is able to show the Check Out Memo, he said.

The Check Out Memo is applied for by the employers and issued to foreign workers or foreign domestic helpers to facilitate their return to their country of origin.

The Malaysian Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry too welcomed the move, saying it would help “revive” about 100,000 Indian-owned banana leaf and nasi kandar restaurants nationwide.
