PUCHONG: Call for a general election if no one is able to command a majority in the Dewan Rakyat, said Lawyers for Liberty (LFL)
In a statement today, LFL director Melissa Sasidaran said that in any democratic society, the government must be formed based on the will of its people.
“Constitutionally, it is now for the person who can command the confidence of the majority of the Dewan Rakyat to form the new government.
“We call upon all parties to work together for the betterment of the country, and not derail the important reforms and progresses already made thus far,” she said.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad resigned from his post and quit as Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chairman.
However, he decided to remain as interim prime minister at the advise of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
This came after a series of events where his party quit the Pakatan Harapan coalition and several disgruntled party leaders quitting the ruling coalition.
Commenting on the recent turn of events, Melissa said that Malaysians made history during the 14th General Election (GE14), where people dislodged Barisan Nasional and voted for a change.
“For the first time since Independence, a new ruling coalition was elected to power,” she said.
However, Melissa said that it was unfortunate that the coalition has been tainted by the relentless tussle for power since GE14.
“Instead of building on the trust and goodwill of the people, these leaders have jeopardised the opportunity for change and disregarded the people’s mandate.
“Therefore, we urge the elected representatives to firmly focus and continue with the reform process and not allow Malaysia to revert to the old corrupt and divisive politics that we voted to leave behind,” she said.
