SANDAKAN, Aug 23 — Efforts are underway to secure a new settlement site for 28 families left homeless by the recent fire at Kampung Pulau Nunuyan Laut, said Libaran MP Datuk Suhaimi Nasir.
Suhaimi, who visited the victims on Saturday, said discussions were being held with the State Lands and Surveys Department to identify suitable government land near the area, with the land matter targeted for resolution within a month.
“If approved, we will work towards ensuring that the land lots are allocated only to the 28 affected families,” said Suhaimi, who is also Risda Holdings Chairman.
He said the victims could not rebuild at their previous site as the land belonged to another party, while temporary accommodation was also being considered following the closure of the evacuation centre on Saturday after operating for three days.
Suhaimi said the National Registration Department was assisting victims who lost identification cards and birth certificates in the fire, while the Implementation Coordination Unit of the Prime Minister’s Department was also helping them access relevant assistance, including e-Kasih.
He also proposed establishing a volunteer fire brigade among island residents to improve emergency preparedness and provide an initial response to fires while awaiting the arrival of firefighters. — Daily Express
