PUCHONG: Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah has urged the party to prepare for the possibility of a snap general election.

Speaking to Utusan Malaysia, Tengku Razaleigh said Umno must hold talks with Barisan Nasional component parties and PAS on the seat allocations as soon as possible.

“We must resolve this so that nothing will divide us later. We must also consider the sentiments of the non-Malays who have been our loyal friends.

“I feel that discussions should start now. What if there is a snap election after a change in leadership?” he asked.

Tengku Razaleigh, who is also known as Ku Li, was referring to the power transition deal between Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his designated successor, PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

During a ceramah in Sandakan recently, Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan said that Mahathir would not keep his promise to step down after two years.

The Rantau state assemblyman claimed that Mahathir would instead dissolve the Parliament and call for fresh election.

Yesterday, Anwar said that both Mahathir and he are fine tuning details on the power transition plan. However, the Port Dickson MP did not provide an exact date on when it would happen.

During Pakatan Harapan’s first year anniversary in power on May 9, Mahathir reiterated that he was just an interim prime minister and would hand over power to his successor after resolving the problems inherited from the previous government.
