KS Maniam, Malaysia’s literary legend, dies

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian literary icon KS Maniam passed away yesterday at the University Malaya Medical Centre.

He was 78.

Maniam was said to have succumbed to cancer.

Maniam, or his full name Subramaniam Krishnan, was born in Bedong, Kedah back in 1942 and he first published a poem at the age of 22.

In a career spanning 55 years, the writer extraordinaire published essays, books and poems which was used even in schools.

His book, The Return was published in London in 1981, followed by In A Far Country in 1993 and Between Lives in 2003. He won several awards for his literary works.

Maniam also served as an English literature lecturer at Universiti Malaya from 1980 to 1997.

He is survived by his wife, two children and two grandkids.
