KUALA LUMPUR: Uzbekistan is keen to draw more visitors from Malaysia and further develop ties in other areas with this Southeast Asian nation.
Rustam Kasimov, the country’s State Advisor to the President, noted that Uzbekistan is undergoing a lot of reforms under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
“These reforms cover political, economic, domestic policy and other areas. Therefore we’ve come to the idea that we need to enhance our relations in all these directions,” he said.
He told reporters this after calling on Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on the sidelines of the Kuala Lumpur Summit (KL Summit) 2019 here today. Dr Mahathir is KL Summit chairman.
On tourism, he said that tourist arrivals from Malaysia to Uzbekistan stands at some 4,000 annually, a small figure compared to Malaysia’s 33 million population.
“We’ve developed a lot in terms of tourism infrastructure. Therefore, the next important step is enhancing awareness of our country for Malaysians to come and visit,” Kasimov said.
In this regard, he said advertising and activities to further promote Uzbekistan will need to be stepped up, including through more active participation of travel agencies from both sides.
Speaking to reporters, Dr Mahathir said he last visited Uzbekistan in 1993 and reckoned that the country has undergone a lot of changes since then.
Uzbekistan, he said, has rich Islamic traditions such as in the field of knowledge, besides having certain expertise of note, particularly mosque decoration.
