JOHOR BAHRU, July 4 — Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) Johor Jaya candidate Lee Wern Yiing believes young voters will play a decisive role in shaping Johor’s future at the upcoming state election.
The 30-year-old first-time candidate said the younger generation’s votes would be crucial in determining the state’s direction.
“Young voters need to be aware of this and, hopefully, they can play a role as they are more exposed to information and technology.
“I am confident that the Johor Jaya voters, including the young, will be wise in making their decision,” she said when met briefly during a campaign walkabout in Taman Johor Jaya here today.
Lee, who is also Johor DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) chief, is no stranger to the constituency, having spent the past eight years handling cases in Johor Jaya.
She said that if elected, she would bring the voices of young people, residents’ concerns and the aspirations of the community to the Johor state assembly.
Lee began her political journey in 2018 when she joined the team of former Johor Jaya assemblyman and state executive councillor Liow Cai Tung as a special officer.
She has since become a familiar face in Johor Jaya through her community work over the past two election cycles.
The Johor Jaya state seat, located in Johor Bahru, is a growing constituency comprising residential neighbourhoods and light industrial areas.
Like many urban constituencies in Johor Bahru, it faces issues related to infrastructure, traffic congestion and local economic development.
DAP, first under Pakatan Rakyat and later PH, has held the semi-urban seat since 2013. However, it is regarded as a marginal constituency after the coalition secured only narrow majorities in previous elections.
Johor Jaya will see a four-cornered contest involving Lee, Barisan Nasional’s Chan San San, Parti Bersama Malaysia’s Lau Yi Leong and independent candidate Lim Hun Peaw.
Polling for the Johor state election is set for July 11, with early voting scheduled for July 7.
