PUCHONG: A large number of students in public and private institutions of higher learning were able to smile broadly today as they began their journey back home.
For Muslim students, it is a happy moment that will be enjoyed with their family as getting together is often difficult, but most families try to break the fast together sometime during Ramadan.
The move to bring back students who were stranded on campus and in the wake of the Movement Control Order (MCO) was among the few concessions announced by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Thursday.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Dr Noraini Ahmad said in a statement yesterday that only students in the green zone were allowed to return to their homes, which were also in the green zone.
The preparation was done in collaboration with various agencies and the Ministry of Higher Education also provided transport services to bring students from the identified institutions of higher learning at the HEIs.
It is estimated that there are about 100,000 students involved, said Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
However, for those who are trapped in the rural areas (not students) or other places who want to return to their destinations are advised to be patient.
Ismail Sabri said the move by the people to return to their respective destinations did not begin on May 1. Obviously, there was a confusion over the date of the movement.
He said the deadline for May 1 was registration through an appointment at the police station, as well as registration through the Gerak Malaysia application.
To date, 300,000 have already registered with the application, including 100,000 applying for a permit to travel because they are stranded in their hometowns and are unable to return home after the CPP.
Ismail Sabri said after receiving the data and information from the public’s request, the National Security Council, Ministry of Health and Royal Malaysian Police would discuss Standard Operating Procedures including setting the date of movement.
As of noon yesterday, the number of positive Covid-19 cases in Malaysia was 5,780 cases, with 98 deaths. The cumulative and recoverable cases of Malaysia are 3,862 cases, 66.8 per cent of the total cases.
