KUALA LUMPUR: The tabling of the highly anticipated Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission 2019 (IPCMC) Bill for second hearing has been postponed again.
Law Minister Datuk Liew Vui Keong made the announcement today, saying the Bill would be debated in March next year instead.
This is the second time the bill has been postponed at the Dewan Rakyat.
Speaking to the media, Liew said the government decided to postpone the second reading the IPCMC Bill following discussions with the Cabinet and the Parliamentary Select Committee, chaired by Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh.
“We need to discuss the matter with relevant stakeholders, such as the police,” he said.
However, Liew assured that the Bill would only be delayed for another three months.
On related matter, Ramkarpal concurred with Liew, saying the government needed to check the Bill with the Attorney-General’s Chambers.
“The report is actually complete and was handed to the Parliament last week,” he said.
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob hailed the postponement as a victory for the bloc and urged the government to withdraw the Bill completely.
“You can look at the records of the parliamentary select committee report that we were always against the Bill,” he said in a press conference at the Parliament lobby.
Last week, Ismail and his team urged the government to withdraw the IPCMC Bill, claiming it would only pressure the police.
The Umno MP instead urged the government to look into the welfare of police officers, especially those working Sabah and Sarawak.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador had also urged the government to give his team some time to scrutinise the Bill, to ensure that the proposed commission would benefit both the police and the public.
