GEORGE TOWN, Aug 14 — Global medtech company Intuitive will invest about RM2 billion over five years in its first facility in Penang.
Its executive vice-president and chief manufacturing and supply chain officer Mark Brosius said the new 316,000-square-foot facility would begin operations in 2028.
“The initial cost of phase one for the land and building will cost about US$200 million (RM817 million), but over a five-year period, including operations, investment should reach near US$500 million,” he said at a press conference announcing an Intuitive-Penang Development Corporation lease agreement at the Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow’s office in Komtar.
He said the facility would be Intuitive’s second in Asia after its existing facility in China, and its first in Southeast Asia and Malaysia.
The new facility is expected to create 1,200 highly skilled jobs by 2032, he said.
He said the site would manufacture Intuitive’s surgical instruments and electromechanical devices used with the da Vinci surgical system.
The new facility would expand the company’s global manufacturing footprint to support growing demand across the Asia-Pacific region, he said.
“Expanding our global manufacturing network requires thoughtful, long-term investments that enable us to scale while maintaining the operational excellence that defines Intuitive,” he said.
He added that the new facility would become an integral part of the company’s global manufacturing operations.
Chow said the establishment of Intuitive at Penang’s Bandar Cassia Technology Park was another milestone in the state’s industrial development in the medtech industry.
“Headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, Intuitive is a global technology leader in minimally invasive care and the pioneer of robotic-assisted surgery,” he said.
He said Penang had the highest concentration of medtech companies in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.
“Six of the world’s top 30 MedTech companies by global sales have established manufacturing operations in Penang,” he said.
