JOHOR BAHRU: The Home Ministry will begin upgrading the Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) at the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) after taking over the management of the building on January 1 this year.

Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the Finance Ministry had allocated RM85 million for the upgrading works in the building which was previously managed by the Prime Minister’s Department.

“We have taken over everything, so the management of the building is under the Home Ministry, so we will look at what needs to be improved, including the lighting system, security and other facilities including toilets for the public,” he told reporters after inspecting the health screening at the building here today.

Muhyiddin who is also chairman of the Special Committee on Congestion at the Johor Causeway, said the cost of improving the lighting system in several parts of the building was estimated to be RM5 million.

He also welcomed the proposal to construct a covered walkway in the premises, but the Federal Government will discuss the matter with PLUS Malaysia Bhd and the state government.

Meanwhile, according to a posting on the official Facebook account of Sultan Johor Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar,  Muhyiddin was also granted an audience at Istana Pasir Pelangi here.

The 30-minute meeting included various topics the Sultan had brought up over the last two months relating to the safety and convenience of the public at the CIQ BSI.

Also present was Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Jamil Rakon.

Last December, Sultan Ibrahim commented on the lighting system at the BSI CIQ Complex, saying he was worried about the safety of the public and pedestrians.

He said the lighting system should be immediately improved for the sake of the safety and comfort of the thousands of people who commute daily from Johor Bahru to Singapore.
