Hishammuddin: Malaysians stuck in India violated visas to attend tabligh event

PUCHONG: Hishammuddin Hussein said the Foreign Ministry was coordinating to bring home 136 pilgrims who had completed the legal process by special aircraft this Friday.

A total of 189 Malaysian tabligh pilgrims are reportedly still stranded in India.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said they were among 191 Malaysians who were categorized as critical.

Explaining it, he said, out of that number, 157 pilgrims were in New Delhi, Chennai (23 pilgrims) and nine in Mumbai.

“Some of them have been charged in court and sentenced, while others have been charged but are still awaiting judicial process.

“Malaysians need to understand that they are guilty of abusing social visit visas,” he told a press conference in Parliament here, on Wednesday.

Commenting further, Hishammuddin said, at this time, the ministry is coordinating to bring home 136 pilgrims who have completed through the legal process by special aircraft this Friday.

While the remaining 52 pilgrims who are still undergoing legal proceedings with a congregation free from charges are in Amravathi will be brought in the near future.

So far, he said, a total of 23,955 Malaysians stranded in 82 countries have been successfully repatriated.

Meanwhile, in the same development, he said a total of 10,159 Malaysians abroad were on the list of potential to be taken home by Wisma Putra.

He said, out of that number, 9,270 people are students, most of whom are in their final year of study. “COVID-19 is still far from over, so we must have proactive planning whether our students who are in their final year need to return and we must take note of where they are,” he said.
