KUALA LUMPUR: Traders are all set for business as they await for the participants of Himpunan Pertahan Kedaulatan Islam (HPKI) at the rally point in Masjid Jamek later today.
Participants are trickling as Jalan Tun Perak is still undergoing road upgrade works.
White shirts with the words of HPKI 0405, Bantah Ratifikasi Statut Rom are among the theme of shirts sold outside Masjid Jamek.
The theme of Umno-Pas unification is also displayed openly.
The rally scheduled to begin at 2pm at Masjid Jamek would see rally goers marching to Sogo shopping complex where speeches are expected to be delivered.
Today’s rally is organised by Gerakan Pembela Ummah focusing on several issues. First, they have claimed that the Pakatan Harapan government are sidelining the Malay community and challenging the sovereignty of Islam.
Other issues that will be raised are their objections to the Rome Statute, International Covenant towards Elimination of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) and government stance on Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).
Two other issues that will also be raised are Teaching and Learning of Science and Mathematics in English and the death of fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim in during riots near a temple in Seafield last November.
The government has denied that the sovereignty of Islam is being challenged. It has also pulled out from ratifying both of the international agreements.
As for UEC, stakeholders are being consulted and there is an inquest on going to find out the perpetrators.
