PUCHONG: In a statement, the Health Ministry today banned misoprostol medication which is used to induce abortion, to be sold in the country after the drug was found sold online illegally.
Its director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the product registration had been terminated in November 2016 and it is often misused by unregistered medical practitioners to induce abortion.

“Using misoprostol or other product is known as Mifepristone without supervision can cause serious implications such as uterine rupture, excessive bleeding, and infection which can lead to death if not treated.
“Moreover if using the drug failed to induce abortion, the baby will be born deformed,” he said.
He said the ministry had received 51 complaints on the drug sold online since last year.
“We also seized the product worth RM35,233 since 2016,” he said.
Hisham said the ministry is closely working with Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Cybersecurity and police to monitor websites, social media and other media platforms to prevent the selling of the banned products.
“Since 2016, we have checked 302 websites with 98 of them have been closed,” he said.
To date, 98 website links sent to SKMM, Facebook, Twitter and Youtube for closure.
