PM Muhyiddin: Govt to build APM complex

Bangi: The government is examining the proposed construction of the Malaysian Civil Defense Force (APM) complex which will be a temporary evacuation center for residents affected by the disaster.

Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the proposal was in Rolling Plan 2 through the 12th Malaysia Plan.

He said it involved the construction of office complexes and training centers in Perak, Sabah and Sarawak.

“The government hopes that the APM can continue to play a role in increasing the preparedness of the local community in facing any form of disaster and emergency at the state, district and grassroots levels.

“This measure will ensure that they are ready to act as first responders when faced with emergency situations such as disasters or fires,” he said.

He said this at the 69th Civil Defense Anniversary Celebration and Opening of the APM Headquarters, here, today.

The theme of the anniversary celebration was ‘Sustainable Public Protection Saves the National Economy’.

Also present were Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Special Duties) Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof and APM Chief Commissioner Datuk Roslan Wahab.

Muhyiddin said the government was committed to upholding the role and function of the APM as well as ensuring that the welfare of its citizens was always protected through the Prime Minister’s Department.

He said various proactive measures would continue to be taken to improve the effectiveness of APM services.

“Among the efforts is to expand emergency and disaster operations to include integrated special operations across agencies.

“This measure is also aimed at combating the Covid-19 pandemic, especially quarantine stations or centers, border control and through community empowerment programs,” he said.

At the same event, Muhyiddin also launched the TRAC APM system, a digitization initiative implemented by the agency in line with the government’s efforts to transform the country’s digitization.

He said the government was also improving or restructuring permanent posts in state and district offices through the Disaster Management Secretariat.

“I understand there are currently only 578 officers holding permanent positions for disaster management in the field,” he said.

Muhyiddin said that during the Covid-19 pandemic, the APM had rendered service and shouldered a great responsibility as the front line in helping the government’s efforts to curb the spread of this epidemic.

“I know many of the APM staff who have been and will be mobilized especially to rural areas in the National Covid-19 Immunization Program (PICK) which is currently being carried out. This includes helping the local community to register for vaccines,” he said.
