KUALA SELANGOR: A total of 642 volunteers from various government agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGO), have gathered today to undertake a mass clean-up of homes of flood victims in this district.

The programme which started at 8.30am, is aimed at helping the residents of 300 houses across five villages, affected by the floods since Oct 25.

Among the villages, Kampung Parit Mahang was the most affected, forcing about 600 residents to take shelter at the temporary relief centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Parit Mahang, a programme spokesman told Bernama.

The other affected villages comprise Kampung Jaya Setia, Kampung Ijok, Kampung Kuantan and Kampung Bukit Kucing.

The various agencies involved in today’s clean-up include the Kuala Selangor District Council, the District Education Office, Shah Alam City Council, Malaysian Armed Forces and the Civil Defence Force.

The NGOs involved include the Malaysian Medical Relief Society (MERCY Malaysia), represented by 22 volunteers, said head volunteer for the programme, Mohd Radzi Mohd Redzuan who added that the organisation had also sent volunteers to Perak to assist flood victims there.

In addition to cleaning the flood-ravaged homes, the volunteers are also cleaning mosques, ‘surau’ and drains in the villages.
