KOTA KINABALU, May 17 — Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) is fully prepared to face the 16th General Election (GE16) following a constitutional amendment to restructure its divisions according to the 26 parliamentary constituencies in Sabah and Labuan.
Its president Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor said the move would strengthen the party’s grassroots machinery and streamline preparations ahead of the parliamentary polls.
“We are ready to face the coming election, organise our party strategy and strengthen the machinery based on parliamentary constituencies. Since we will be facing the parliamentary general election, this amendment is timely and appropriate,” he told reporters after the party’s special general assembly at the Sabah International Convention Centre on Sunday.
The special assembly, attended by delegates from across Sabah and Labuan, approved amendments to the party constitution to allow its divisions to be aligned with parliamentary constituencies instead of the previous State Legislative Assembly (DUN)-based structure.
Hajiji said the proposal received unanimous backing from delegates, including representatives from the Women, Youth and Beliawanis wings, as well as division leaders statewide.
He added that the amendments would now be submitted to the Registrar of Societies (ROS) for approval before the party proceeds with reorganising its structure.
“The constitutional amendments have been completed and unanimously supported. This means our restructuring from 74 divisions to 26 has been approved and will now be submitted to ROS.
“After this, we will update and strengthen the party structure based on parliamentary constituencies,” he said.
On preparations for GE16, Hajiji said Gagasan Rakyat remained open to cooperation with other political parties if such collaboration would benefit Sabah and promote unity among the people.
“In politics, we must look at all possibilities broadly. If it brings benefits to the state and strengthens unity among the people, why not?
“Our struggle and goal are to unite the people and continue developing Sabah,” he said.
Meanwhile, Hajiji announced that the party had received a large number of new members from former Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) members in Keningau during the gathering.
“I am very pleased that in conjunction with this special general assembly, we are also welcoming many former Warisan members from Keningau to join Gagasan Rakyat and continue the struggle together,” he said.
