KUALA LUMPUR: The National Science Centre (PSN) is providing visitors with a breathtaking experience of the prehistoric world, with dinosaurs coming to life, through augmented reality (AR) technology at its ‘Dinosaur Encounter’ exhibition.
PSN assistant science officer (exhibition) Saripah Zarina Wan Abu Bakar said the exhibition is unlike others previously held, as with the AR technology, visitors could see how dinosaurs lived in that era more effectively.
“Through science and technology, we take visitors to feel the reality of the pre-historic world when the dinosaurs became extinct through various natural phenomena such as volcanic eruptions and discoveries of fossils.
“For AR and animatronic dinosaurs, PSN, with the cooperation of WeGrow Global Sdn Bhd, brought special machine from overseas to develop 18 dinosaurs, comprising nine species, mostly based on their actual size, for the Dinosaur Encounter exhibition,” she said when met by Bernama here.
The ranger for the exhibition, Mohamad Ashraf Md Salleh said visitors could see the dinosaurs alive using tablet screens (Ipad) that would be provided.
“An application has been installed in the Ipad, namely the AR, for visitors to scan the dinosaur’s skeleton, which they can then see the skeletons coming to life into its original form,” he said.
Meanwhile, Saifulnizam Nordin, 46, from Perak, when met at PSN, said his visit to the science centre, along with his children, was more rewarding than going to shopping malls.
“It is more fun to spend time at PSN and visit the exhibition because we get to know more about the lives of the dinosaurs and animal species that we don’t even know existed before,” he said.
Another visitor at PSN, Eileen Lui , 33, from Tawau, said the exhibition provided her family with an experience of living during the era of the dinosaurs.
“It was an exciting experience and a thrilling adventure. My kids are very happy and they are having a lot of fun here. Their favorite part is the dinosaurs,” she said.
A dinosaur lover, Aiman Rashdan Abdul Rashid,14, from Subang Jaya, was overwhelmed with the opportunity of getting to watch the dinosaurs come to life.
“I have been wanting to see a life dinosaur since I was very young, and finally I got the chance. I get to learn more about dinosaurs that what is in the books and how they became extinct,” he added.
This is not the first exhibition on dinosaurs held at the National Science Center. The first was “Dinos Alive” in 2011, and ‘Dinosaurs Live’ the following year.
Beside the dinosaur exhibition, visitors can also visit the marine aquarium, freshwater aquarium, Wonderspark gallery, Eureka gallery, aquatic house, water plaza, survive the bunker, which are among the vivacious, educational and just-plain-fun, hands on science and technology exhibits at PSN.
The ‘Dinosaur Encounter’ is open to the public every day except Friday, from 9am to 5pm with entry fee of RM15 for adults and RM12 for children.
Held since last Nov 2, the exhibition has so far attracted more than 35,000 visitors.
