Ex-Tamil Nesan staff: Pay us compensation, Vell Paari

KUALA LUMPUR: A group of ex-Tamil Nesan staff staged a peaceful protest today outside the office of their former managing editor Datuk Seri S Vell Paari.

The protest, which took place outside Wisma E&C in Damansara this morning, urged Vell Paari to pay up their outstanding salaries and compensation.

“Where is our pay? Come down, Vell Paari. What do we want? Pay and compensation,” said Tamil Nesan’s ex-editor K Pathmanabhan.

However, Vell Paari was not present at the scene and one of his staff received the memorandum on his behalf.

In Feb, Tamil Nesan, the oldest Tamil daily in Malaysia, shut down its operations after being in business for 94 years.

The management promised its staff that they would provide two months’ salary as compensation. However, the editorial staff received only one-month salary.

On July 17, the ex-editorial staff lodged police reports against Vell Paari for allegedly committing commercial crime for not paying statutory payments to the EPF and Socso.

However, a source told The Leaders Online that all statutory payments for the ex-workers have been made since then.

Commenting on the matter, Tamil Nesan’s former chief photographer SM Sundar said the group would allow Vell Paari seven days grace period for him to meet his former employees.

“If he doesn’t meet us, we will stage another protest,” he said.

The group also questioned Human Resources Minister M Kulasegaran for dragging his feet in resolving their plight compared to the staff of Malay daily, Utusan Malaysia.

“We have already met the minister but there has not been any action.  Utusan Malaysia had a similar problem and I am glad that Umno resolved it,” said Pathmanabhan.
