PUCHONG: Former Australian prime minister Tony Abbott told a news agency that the Malaysian government believed ‘very early on’ that the disappearance of MH370 was a ‘murder-suicide’ case.
Speaking to Australia’s news.com.au, Abott said he was convinced in the early weeks of the plane disappearance itself that MH370 was downed by its pilot, Capt Zaharie Ahmad Shah.
“My understanding – my very clear understanding – from the very top levels of the Malaysian government is that from very, very early on, they thought it was a murder-suicide by the pilot.
“I’m not going to say who said what to whom. But let me reiterate – I want to be absolutely crystal clear – it was understood at the highest levels that this was almost certainly murder-suicide by the pilot.
“A mass murder-suicide by the pilot,” claimed Abott.
The remark will be featured in a documentary on the tragedy, entitled ‘MH370: The Untold Story’ which is scheduled to be aired by Sky News this week.
MH70 went missing on March 8, 2014. Soon after, a worldwide search and rescue operation was deployed to find the missing Malaysia Airlines flight.
Until today, the plane wreckage has yet to be found.
The plane, which carrying 239 people, was en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing when it veered of course and made several unsanctioned turns over the Straits of Malacca before going towards the Southern Indian Ocean.
Underwater searches for the plane in the Indian Ocean have covered 120,000 square kilometres and cost about A$200 million was subsequently suspended in January 2017 until Malaysia accepted a “no-cure, no-fee” offer from US exploration firm Ocean Infinity in 2018.
However, the US operation also went unsuccessful, prompting the mission to be aborted in May 2018.
“Good night. Malaysian three-seven-zero,” were the MH370 Captain’s last words to air traffic control team in Malaysia before the plane dropped off the radar at 1:21am.
